Barbara Jean Weingart is an award winning artist.  She has shown at many prestigious shows in the Northwest and Northeast, and has won awards for her work.  Her work has been sold in galleries and stores throughout the United States.

Barbara is inspired by nature in all seasons.  She has a cabin in a remote area in the Adirondacks and spends summers there, painting and paddling.

Barbara enjoys painting on simple shapes like scarves and yardage.  She then creates kimonos and ties, as well as bags, pillows, duvet covers, table runners, and home decorative items.  Barbara paints on natural textiles like silk, cotton, linen and wool.  She considers these her canvas.  She has been silk painting since 1986, and has sold her work professionally since 1990.  Barbara has been an artist all of her life.

Barbara Jean Weingart finished work on her Master’s degree in Textile and Fashion Design at Syracuse University in May, 2002.

Artist's Statement

Appreciating the beauty and peace of nature has always been a fundamental source of pleasure in my life.  I spend my most memorable moments paddling on a wilderness lake, listening to the loons sing, and taking into my memory the colors and shapes, sounds and feelings from the beauty that surrounds me.

I love the organic shapes that flow from nature.  The perfection of these seemingly imperfect shapes are what I aspire to in my work.  I retain, in my mind, the images and feelings that are related to flowing water, bubbles under ice, the songs of the trees when the wind flows through the branches, patterns of sunlight and shadow, and the feeling of soft breezes on summer evenings.

Nature’s gifts to us include wonderful fibers from which we make textiles, such as silk, wool, linen and cotton.  I use only natural textiles for the basis of my work and begin with a blank canvas of white, which I embellish to resemble the feelings and memories of my ventures into the natural world.  My techniques include batik, painting, dying, discharge printing, stamping, stenciling and screen-printing.  All the design elements I use in my work are acquired from nature’s inspirations.

The embellishment of fine fabrics fascinates me.  The texture and drape of a fine fabric adds to the finished product, which is why I use only natural fibers in my work.  Nature is perfect and has provided us with what we need to be comfortable and beautiful.  My art-to-wear clothing and home accessories are made from only the finest natural fabrics available to me.  They are hand painted and embellished.

You can be sure that any ‘barbarajean’ original that you acquire is one of a kind, and made with loving care.  I take great pleasure in creating beautiful art-to-wear pieces of clothing and accessories (both for personal and home adornment).  With proper care, they will give you years of pleasure.
